Dear SW Basketballers,

Please read the following from Shaun Pope at Grads Basketball, one of the community user groups outraged by the University’s implementation of paid parking at Saville.

Get informed, and please let our families voices be heard!

Unilateral Move By U of A to Convert 30% of Saville Parking to PAID!

Many organizations, individuals, and businesses were involved in sponsoring and donating money to the build of the Saville sports Centre. Those donors and sponsors are listed on their website and can be found on the donor wall in the Saville Centre. A committee was formed including the Edmonton Grads Basketball Centre to work together on making decisions regarding building operations and policies. There was also a legal agreement put in place that there was not to be paid parking, and parking would always be free at the facility.

As many of you know Parking is a battle at the best of times when the building is operating at full capacity. For a few years now the U of A has been exploring charging for parking. The U of A has taken the stance that as long as they leave some free parking, they are not in breach of that contract. This is not in spirit of the agreement, nor the way it was interpreted by the committee.

Do your part, use your voice and lets do what we can in the best interest of the Community!

Below is the notice we received today.

Dear valued community basketball participants of the Edmonton Saville Basketball Centre,

Effective October 1st the University of Alberta is converting a section of the Saville Parking Lot into a PAID PARKING ZONE.  See the attached Parking Notice and please distribute it to your members, athletes, parents, coaches, etc.  Although we do not accept or approve this change – we are obliged to ensure you are informed and that you relay this information on to your people.

The three GO Community Centre Partner organizations; the Edmonton Volleyball Centre Society, Edmonton Grads Basketball and Ortona Gymnastics will be fighting this parking change, as it is viewed as breach of the GO Centre Venture Agreement by the University of Alberta.  We hope that you will lend us your support. as this matter gets played out in the media, follow us on Twitter @GO_Centre and please retweet and comment on this tweet… GO Community Centre Board objects to University of Alberta pay parking pilot at Saville Community Sports Centre

Please read our Media Release and Letter to the U of A:

If we remain quiet, it will signal to the University that the Community does not care about having to pay for parking and you can expect that the remaining “Free” parking stalls will eventually all be converted into PAID PARKING.

We encourage you to voice your concerns about this change via social media or directly to the University of Alberta Parking Services by emailing: or call 780-248-7275
